Session Details

I. Introduction: Formal welcome and introductions of executive committee, general instructions and a brief overview of the conference's objectives and themes.

II. Opening Presentation: "Health and Human Rights - How the Other Half Dies." Looks at how health administration impacts the allocation of resources with respect of urban and rural populations. Further emphasis in also placed on the responsibility of today's medical education system to cater to the growing needs of the future and to ultimately bridge the link between  healthcare policy and practice.

III. Keynote: "How the Globalization of the Life Sciences can make the world a healthier, wealthier and fairer place." Address challenges in healthcare (present) and how macro-level involvement ultimately affects the delivery of healthcare (looking at top-down organizations; national and federal health care systems, major hospitals and institutions, funding, economical role and social development). Contrast this with underserved communities and the challenges that are evident here (lack of funding, lack of development, physical and spatial isolation, cultural minorities/groups, etc). Emphasize the importance of action and management; how the challenges in both situation are reversible and can be overcome.

IV: Second Presentation: "Close to home: Challenges & Disparities in Healthcare for Canada's Aboriginal Peoples"- Discuss the specific challenges in the healthcare system for Aboriginal Peoples and reflect on how cultural minorities in conjunction with rural, remote locality can impact the delivery and access of healthcare.

V. Speakers Panel:  Organized according to a Macro-factor- "Social", "Cultural", "Economical/Development/Urban Planning", "Health Administration". Experts from these areas will discuss the respective role of healthcare in each and how each is shaped/ influenced/affected by the healthcare system keeping the needs of the community (whether it is an urban community or a rural one) as the priority.

VI. Case Studies/ Break-out Sessions: Showcase the International perspective of the situation: highlight case studies from noted urban centres in the world and gloss over key medical challenges in healthcare delivery.
